- Story Text: Malaysia and China on Thursday (May 29) vowed to continue the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, which disappeared almost three months ago.
Malaysia's prime minister, Najib Razak, is visiting China to mark 40 years of diplomatic ties, and met with Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang.
The pair attended a welcoming ceremony, a bilateral meeting and a signing ceremony.
During the meeting, Razak conveyed his condolences to the families of those on board the plane, which disappeared while en route to Beijing.
"And let me, once again, express our sorrows and condolences for the next of kin and the families involved. And we owe it to them to continue the search, and Malaysia will continue the search, and with China, Australia, the other countries, because this tragic incident, so complex, is unprecedented," said Razak.
154 passengers on board flight MH370 were Chinese nationals, but Razak will not meet with their families on his first visit to China since the plane disappeared.
A spokesman for Najib's China delegation told Reuters on Wednesday he could not immediately comment on why there would be no meeting.
Li Keqiang said China would not give up searching for the plane. He urged Razak to establish a new plan to find MH370, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
Families of Chinese passengers have expressed frustration about what they see as a lack of transparency from Malaysian authorities on the search for the plane. An unprecedented multi-national search for the jet has so far proved unsuccessful.
Earlier on Thursday (May 29), Australia said officials remained confident the missing Malaysia Airlines jet is somewhere in southern Indian Ocean despite searchers saying wreckage was not on the seabed in the area they had identified.
