- Story Text: The Beatles were remembered and their music celebrated at a benefit in New York on Wednesday that featured Melissa Etheridge, Wyclef Jean and Joan Osborne.
The legendary Beatles whose music has stood the test of time were honored by some of the hottest singers of today at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. The concert was a benefit to raise money for the Caron Foundation that helps drug addicts and alcoholics recover from their addictions.
One of the greatest female singers of today, Melissa Etheridge, paid homage to the Beatles performing a stunning version of, "Come Together." Her trademark scratchy voice and intense emotion on stage had the audience stunned as she shook and screamed her way into frenzy covering a classic Beatles song originally performed by John Lennon.
When asked what makes the Beatles so great, Hip Hop king and rap master, Wyclef Jean said that it was "The fusion of rock, trying different things, you know the element of rock and roll with symphony so it's just bunch of classics, you know, definitely." His version of "Let It Be"
with a reggae beat showed how well the Beatles music translates to so many musical genres and crosses so many cultural barriers.
Joan Osborne, a leading voice in female rock of the 21st century, reflected on the Beatles and their unique place in history, "There was just something about that moment in time that they sort of surfed this wave of the culture they were right on top of it and it carried them and they were up to the challenge so I think that had a a lot to do with it too, it's just the history that they were a part of."
India Arie said that the Beatles were sincere in their music, "They were experimental, you know what I'm saying and sincere and they liked music they did music for the sake of the music, that's what makes them great."
Her version of, "The Long and Winding Road" was a Moving tribute to a band that she and so many others have such incredible admiration for.
Johnny Resnick, lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls did his version of, "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window." His energy was well placed in one of the Beatles most innovative and intriguing songs.
The encore was a performance of one of the Beatles earliest hits, "Twist and Shout." It brought together the many different performers, from their very different musical backgrounds all in synch to a Beatles classic. The audience twisted and shouted in delight to the music that stands the test of time and complements those who continue to perform it . - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
