- Story Text: China urged for calm and restraint on the Korean peninsula, as South Korea held major land and sea military drills on Thursday (December 23).
North Korea responded by denouncing its neighbour as a warmonger, but stopped short of threatening a retaliatory strike.
China, the North's only major ally, has urged for dialogue between both sides to resolve the crisis and has been reluctant to lay blame. The United States and its allies have been frustrated with China's stance, as they want Beijing to do more to rein in Pyongyang.
"The current situation on the Korean Peninsula is still highly complicated and sensitive. We call on all the relevant parties to stay calm and restrained, and take a responsible attitude to help ease the situation and maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. We also hope all parties involved can work together to make progress and resume dialogue and negotiations." Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a news conference in Beijing.
South Korea held a major military drill on Thursday in the Pocheon region, which lies between Seoul and the heavily armed Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) that divides the two Koreas. It also continued naval live-fire exercises 100 km (60 miles) south of the maritime border with North Korea.
Jiang also said that China is willing to help countries in the Eurozone return to economic health.
"China supports the financial stabilisation package of the European Union and the International Monetary Fund's decision to respond to the European debt crisis. We're willing to support the Eurozone countries in overcoming the crisis to achieve economic recovery and fiscal health," she said.
Many global investors are looking to China, as the owner of the world's largest foreign exchange reserves with $2.65 trillion USD, to come to the Eurozone's rescue. The Euro has taken a fall in global financial markets due to Europe's debt problems. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
