- Story Text: The Swiss resort town of Davos prepares to welcome delegates to the annual World Economic Forum.
Swiss police and special troops have been making final security preparations on Tuesday (January 20) for the World Economic Forum, which will start on Wednesday (January 21) in the exclusive Alpine ski resort of Davos.
Switzerland is assigning about 7,000 police and troops to provide security to 2,100 delegates including, 34 heads of state and 200 chief executives.
Neighbouring Germany is also sending several hundred police officers to help.
Aircraft are banned from airspace over and around Davos. There will be police check points on all roads leading into the resort, and all demonstrations are banned except one in the nearby town of Chur.
Violent demonstrations against the WEF have occurred in the past.
Since 1971, the World Economic Forum has been bringing together leaders of the world's governments, business community and social movements.
This year's participants will include United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, United States Vice President Dick Cheney and Attorney General John Ashcroft, U.S. Iraqi administrator Paul Bremer, French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin, Pakistani President Pervez Musharaf, Iranian President Kathami, Libyan Prime Minister Shokri Ghanem, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabeel Shaath.
