- Story Text: Pakistan's army has been patrolling the mountains along
the closed border with Afghanistan, searching for illegal
immigrants including al-Qaeda members and Osama bin Laden.
Pakistan soldiers on Sunday (January 6) patrolled the
mountains along the closed border with Afghanistan, continuing
the search for al Qaeda members and Osama bin Laden.
The patrol was mounted south of the Tora Bora mountains where
U.S. planes bombed the last main stronghold of the al Qaeda
network in Afghanistan into submission.
Fighters from the eastern alliance against Afghanistan's
now ousted Taliban also played a part in the battle.
What remains after that last stand is a painstaking search
by Pakistan and U.S. forces for the last remnants of the
network.
Pakistan has closed its borders with Afghanistan in order
to prevent a flood of Afghani refugees fleeing into a country
already bloated with refugees on its northern border.
"We are completely closing and patrolling the border. The
last few days we captured 200 people who were crossing the
border."
"The Pakistan army is here and we are in control (of the
border). Nobody can cross the border or move illegally," said
soldier Azhar Ullah.
At the same time it is attempting to catch members of the
al Qaeda network and its leader, Osama bin Laden, accused
of masterminding suicide air attacks on New York and Washington
last September in which around 3,000 people died.
