- Story Text: The three candidate cities bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid, arrived in Lausanne on Wednesday (July 3) to present their plans to the entire membership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
An IOC report on the three cities wanting to host the 2020 Summer Olympics indicated there was no clear favourite among the bids.
The Evaluation Commission, chaired by the IOC member in Great Britain and IOC Vice-President Sir Craig Reedie, spent four days in each candidate city earlier this year to conduct on-site inspections and carry out an assessment of the cities' Olympic Games projects.
The election of the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games will take place on September 7 during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Prior to the IOC members casting their votes, the candidate cities will make their final presentations, followed by a final report by Evaluation Commission Chairman. The city that obtains an absolute majority of votes will be elected.
The struggling Spanish economy was of no risk to Madrid, security in Turkey did not threaten Istanbul's chances and Tokyo's low public support was offset by praise for the bid's financial strength, the report said on Tuesday.
Unlike past evaluation commission reports, there was no rating of the bid cities or overall summary which could point to a frontrunner in the race to host the world's biggest multi-sport event.
Istanbul, bidding for the fifth time in the last six votes, received a thumbs-up for government backing, wide public support and its capability to deliver construction for the Games on time - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
