- Story Text: The Czech Republic's State Veterinary Authority, confirmed on Monday (February 25) that traces of horse DNA had been found on several hundreds of kilograms of products including Swedish meatballs and Polish hamburgers.
"The State Veterinary Authority confirmed the findings from Friday were in two products - Swedish meat balls and Polish hamburgers - horse DNA was found. We must conclude from this that they (the products) contain horse meat. First research was done in the State Veterinary Institute in Olomouc and it was confirmed in a Prague lab. It was done on several hundreds of kilograms of products - meat balls as well as Polish hamburger," said the spokesman of the Czech Veterinary Authority, Josef Duben.
"It doesn't mean that these products are hazardous to people's health, but this is false labelling, meaning that the horsemeat was used as a cheaper replacement for beef or some of it was mixed into the product but not declared," Duben added.
Earlier on Monday an IKEA Czech's spokesman said that a batch of meatballs pulled from shelves at IKEA's stores after Czech inspectors discovered they contained horsemeat, had been on sale in several European countries, and that it had been withdrawn two weeks ago.
Europe's growing horse meat scandal is expected to be addressed at a meeting of EU agriculture ministers in Brussels.
At least a dozen countries are involved in the horse meat affair, which implicates some of the biggest meat processors and food producers.
