- Story Text: Pakistan's army said on Friday (September 12) authorities had arrested a group of Taliban militants responsible for shooting Malala Yousafzai, a teenage activist who was targeted for her campaign against Taliban efforts to deny girls education.
"The entire gang involved in the attempt on the life of Malala, her colleagues and friends, Kainat and Shazia, has been busted. They have been identified and arrested. This gang comprised of total of ten terrorist. It was known as Shura amongst the TTP faction and it was part of the defunct TTP," Pakistani Army spokesman, Major-General Asim Saleem Bajwa, said.
Pakistani Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for shooting Malala in 2012 for her passionate advocacy of women's right to education but no one had until now been arrested. Two other schoolgirls were wounded in the attack.
"The hierarchy would workThis group, Shura, would act on the orders of Fazlullah who is based in Kunar province of Afghanistan. He had two accomplices there, whose name was Abdullah alias Abu Bakar and Habib Khan alias Maseen Da. This is a Pashto word. These two terrorist would transmit messages, communicate the message to the Shura group here - as it was called - and then Shura group would undertake certain activities," Bajwa added.
Malala survived and was airlifted to Britain for treatment, and has since become a symbol of defiance in the fight against militants operating in Pashtun tribal areas in northwest Pakistan.
Malala has won the European Union's human rights award and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize last year.
Now based in Britain, she is unable to return to her homeland because of Taliban threats to kill her and her family members. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
