- Story Text: A new exhibition showing the works of Giotto, the man credited with inspiring the Italian Renaissance, is enabling visitors to become 'part' of the renowned paintings thanks to a 3D display.
Organisers have focused the works around the artist's acclaimed St. Francis Cycle, a masterpiece made up of 28 scenes from the life of the Franciscan saint, which is widely celebrated for its naturalistic style. The original frescoes, located in the Upper Church of the Assisi Basilica, have been elaborated into 3D images which are now on display in the Monte Frumentario palace.
Visitors who step 'into' the scenes have an idea of spaces and colours just, organisers says, as Giotto would have liked them to be experienced. The virtual frescoes can be compared with reproductions of the actual artwork through a series of displays and touch screens.
"It gives us the opportunity to refresh our knowledge on art and on Giotto, our knowledge on the treasures that are collected in this place" said father Pietro Piemontese the custodian of the Holy Franciscan convent of Assisi.
Not far from the exhibition, in the Chapel of Saint Nicholas, visitors are allowed to climb the scaffolding and watch a team of restorers working to restore some of Giotto's 700-year-old frescoes.
"(The aim) is to to let people feel what specialists - restorers, historians, journalists - have always had the privilege to experience. It is a way to get people closer to art, to educate them. It's a very positive experiment" said the head of the art restorers at work in the Franciscan complex of Assisi.
