- Story Text: Hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese joined National Day celebrations to mark the 102nd anniversary of Taiwan's foundation on Thursday (October 10).
China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since Nationalist forces, defeated by the Communists, fled to the island at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. China considers Taiwan a renegade province and has never ruled out the use of force to bring it under its control.
Military honour of guards performed in front of crowds before Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou's speech.
Ma called on both sides of the straits to strengthen communication and improve the lives of the people.
"At present, both sides of the straits should consistently enhance each other's political trust through communication and negotiation, consistently enlarge and deepen the communication and interaction across the straits in order to increase the well-being of the people. At the same time, promote establishment of administrative organizations that set up across the straits to strengthen services for people. (We should) make joint effort for both sides' cooperation to reach a new accomplishment of revitalization of the Chinese nation," Ma spoke in front of the presidential palace.
Ma's speech was followed by some celebration performances.
While relations have improved dramatically since the China-friendly Ma was elected Taiwan President in 2008, with a series of trade and tourism deals signed, there has been no progress towards political reconciliation or a lessening of military distrust. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
