- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: The Cypriot President, Spyros Kyprianou has called for an international conference to secure the withdrawal of Turkish troops who intervened on the island seven years ago.The announcement was made during the Cypriot President's visit to Paris on Thursday (3 December) where he met President Mitterand and sought French support for breaking the deadlock in Cyprus.
SYNOPSIS: The meeting between the two leaders at the Elysee Palace ended after one hour.President Kyprianou is currently seeking support for his government's call for an international conference on the problem facing Cyprus.He also wants to see direct talks between the Greek and Turkish communities on the island restarted.Before President Kyprianou arrived in Paris, French government officials said they believe the Cyprus dispute should be settled by the island's two communities.After the talks President Kyprianou told newsmen how his meeting with President Mitterand had gone.
