- Story Text: Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto arrived at the International Criminal Court where his trial resumed on Wednesday (October 2) after judges adjourned it to allow him to return home in the wake of the Westgate crisis.
Ruto was permitted to return to Kenya to deal with the aftermath of the attack in which 67 people were killed this month, Kenya's bloodiest militant attack in years.
Ruto, fellow defendant radio presenter Joshua Arap Sang and Kenyan members of parliament held a prayer outside the ICC in The Hague before entering the building.
Ruto and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta face charges of crimes against humanity in relation to their role in co-ordinating a wave of violence that swept Kenya in the aftermath of the country's contested 2007 elections.
The court's unusually swift decision to adjourn his trial on September 23 was taken during an emergency session after prosecutors said they had no objection to a short delay in proceedings, and a representative for the witnesses broke down in tears in the courtroom, saying Ruto should be allowed to attend to the urgent matter. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
