- Story Text: The spiritual leader of the world's Anglicans, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, on Friday (June 28) visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where he called for a 'simplicity' and 'unity' among Christians.
Welby met with the Christian Orthodox leaders of the Church, where Christians believe Jesus was crucified.
Welby said the crucifixion of Jesus is the one element that unites churches around the world.
"We come because here a man died on a cross, and when we do that we are compelled as church leaders to a simplicity that says: 'All this was done for me. What Lord shall I do for Thee?" he said.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is located at the end of the Via Dolorosa, the route Christians believe Jesus had taken when carrying his cross to his death.
It is Welby's first visit to the region since he became Archbishop of Canterbury in March.
During his visit Welby met with Muslim and Jewish leaders, as well as Israeli President Shimon Peres.
He also inaugurated a medical centre on the West Bank.
Welby has visited the Middle East several times before he became leader of the Church of England. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
