- Story Text: Villagers and tourists visiting Indonesia's Dieng plateau in Central Java were warned on Monday (May 30) to avoid a volcanic crater spewing toxic gases since last week.
Authorities said warning signs had been erected around Timbang crater on the plateau 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) above sea level.
"This is normal activity but we have to be on alert. We have told the villagers to leave the area of one kilometres from the crater but some choose to stay," said Teguh Dwi Paryono, head of Central Java volcanology office.
The plateau, between Java's north coast and the southern-central hinterland, is a popular tourist area, with ancient Hindu temples and brightly coloured sulphur springs and lakes.
Indonesia, on the Pacific "ring of fire", has 130 active volcanoes. The most famous volcano, Krakatau, sits between Java island and Sumatra island, shattered in an 1883 explosion and triggered a tidal wave the killed more than 36,000 people - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
