- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Italy on Wednesday (May 8) for a two-day visit with Syria and the Middle East region expected to be top of the list in talks.
Later in the day Kerry will meet with Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who has special responsibility for negotiations with the Palestinians, and has flown in specially for the meeting.
On Thursday (May 9) Kerry will meet with new Italian prime minister Enrico Letta and hold a news conference later in the day with Italian foreign minister Emma Bonino.
Kerry arrived from Moscow where he has been seeking help in ending Syria's civil war, telling President Vladimir Putin that common interest in a stable Middle East could bridge divisions among the big powers.
Putin, however, kept John Kerry waiting three hours before their meeting at the Kremlin, fiddled with a pen while his guest spoke and made no mention in his own public remarks of the conflict in Syria, which has generated some of the frostiest exchanges between Washington and Moscow since the Cold War. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
