- Story Text: With the World Cup just around the corner, South Korea's capital city lights up the night sky with a spectacular light show.
The light show, dubbed 'Gate to the World - Kwanghwamoon' (pronounced KWANG HWAH MOON) and featuring more than 4,000 lights, transformed central Seoul when unveiled on Wednesday (May 15).
Coloured lights forming Venetian gondolas, the Eiffel Tower, and constellations of stars were projected down the avenue leading up to to the Kwanghwamoon gate and on the gate itself, one of the main entrances to a Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910) palace in the city centre.
Kwanghwamoon means "The Gate of Light" in Korean.
More than 30 images are projected onto the gate during the show, and each is shown for 27 minutes in turn.
"All people of all countries will go in Seoul, and so the gate represents all the gates of the world, and this is a sort of game, a visual game, between the gate of Seoul and gates of the world," said Jean-Michel Quesne, who designed the light show.
Seoul residents were delighted with the light show.
"It is really nice. I have lived near Kwanghwamoon for 30 years, but it is the first time I have seen something like this. It is really great," said 55-year-old motorcycle driver Lim Soon-hong.
Seoul will continue the show nightly until June 25 to promote the city ahead of the World Cup soccer finals.
France and Senegal will open the World Cup soccer finals in Seoul's World Cup Stadium on May 31 and the final match will be held in Yokohama, Japan on June 30. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
