- Story Text: A Paris exhibition has brought together a fascinating collection of objects recovered from the wreck of the Titanic, along with television footage and photographs of the passengers on the fateful voyage.
Everybody knows the tragic story of the Titanic, the magnificent liner which set sail in April 1912, never to arrive at its destination, New York. A massive collision with an iceberg left the supposedly 'unsinkable' ship floundering in the icy seas killing 1490 passengers.
The French capital's Cite des Sciences is currently putting on an exhibition bringing together hundreds of objects recovered from the wreck of the Titanic, as well as photographs, television footage and recreations of various parts of the ship. Visitors can get a taste of how life on board was like.
Exhibition organiser Sabine Belloc said 'The Titanic was a myth before its maiden voyage. There was the journey, then the catastrophe and this superb, you could say sublime tragedy. And so, afterwards, the myth has carried on.' The artefacts in the exhibition were recovered by over six expeditions between 1987 and 2000 to the wreck of the Titanic. The over 6000 objects underwent a thorough process of conservation to ensure that they won't be harmed by air after lying on the bed of the ocean for suck a long time.
'All the objects are treasures. The simple fact that they were part of a boat that was a legend, a myth-these are treasures and I think that every visitor will more or less find their favourite. A cup, a pair of glasses, a sheet of music, a magnificent, beautiful piece of remains, like the porthole that was found in the first...Everyone will find their thing, I think...' said Sabine Belloc.
'It was a boat which had to evoke luxury even for third class passengers- even for the more modest people, whether they were returning to their country or travelling to America in the hope of making their fortune.' she added.
The exhibition's centerpiece is a clock, showing 10.40, exactly an hour before the fateful collision. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
