- Story Text: Outgoing Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti has said all parties have a responsibility to ensure that a government could be formed after inconclusive elections left no party able to form a majority in the upper house.
Outgoing Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Monday (February 25) that all parties had a responsibility to ensure that a government could be formed after inconclusive elections left no party able to form a majority in the upper house.
"It is really a moment of great regret that despite the repeated discussions with the heads of the parties, the electoral law was not modified" he said but added that it would be premature to discuss possible outcomes.
Monti was speaking as final votes were being counted which showed the centre-left coalition holds a narrow lead in the race for the lower house.
"I really hope that this phase of change brings good solutions to the Italian citizens and that these also provide as little turbulence as possible to the financial markets on which all of us depend as we are all part of the system" he said.
The latest projections indicate that no party or coalition has enough support to form a majority in the Senate, which a government would need to pass legislation. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
