- Story Text: Artist and Lennon's widow Yoko Ono visits retrospective about her work in Frankfurt.
Many people know Yoko Ono mainly because of her relationship with Beatles' frontman John Lennon. But a new retrospective in Frankfurt shows that Lennon's widow was already an Avant-garde artist in her own right before she met the famous band leader.
Just before her 80th birthday, the Schirner Art Gallery presents a selection of 60 years of her artistic work.
On Thursday (February 14) Ono herself visited "Half-A-Wind-Show. A retrospective". Speaking at a news conference at the gallery, Ono said she felt very thankful for the exhibition. "My work is very very quiet and I ask you to find out something from it," said Ono.
About 100 art works are put on show, including roomfilling installations, movies, photography and paintings. Being a pioneer in conceptual and performance art, many people still know Ono better for her role within the feminist and peace movement. Ono herself wants her audience to participate with her art and get involved.
"You have within you what is making you a creative person, and that's being an artist. All of you are artists and please understand that and bring out the truth in yourself," Ono told her audience. Max Hollein, director of the Schirner Art Gallery said Ono was not only one of the most prominent figures in cultural history of the Twentieth Century, "but on the other hand who is an Avant-garde artist, who's work is extremely relevant for a next generation of artists and who developed a work in the 60ies and 70ies that is without precedent and really explored the borders of conceptual and performative art."
Hollein added that her work as an artist might have suffered from the relationship with Lennon. "So I think there is a new generation now that can look at Yoko Ono's artistic oeuvre and can actually put that at the centre of our analysis, of this extremely interesting and wonderful artist," said Hollein.
"Half-A-Wind-Show" will be opened in Frankfurt until May 12, afterwards the retrospective will be shown in Norway, Austria and Spain. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
