- Story Text: Russian police arrested dozens of protesters at the Red Square in Moscow on Saturday (April 27) during an unsanctioned protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin's rule.
The protest was intended to call for new presidential elections and draw attention to jailed activists, including the 'Bolotnaya 17' - a group of people arrested during a protest on the eve of Putin's inauguration in May 2012, one of whom was sentenced to four-and-a-half years for "mass disorder" and violence against the police.
"We came to remind people that the elections were illegitimate, there were violations. So we fight for the new elections to be set," said opposition activist Pavel Kuznetsov.
Police moved in quickly to break up the protest on Saturday, detaining dozens of people. Some of the protesters voluntarily walked into police busses, some were carried in by the police.
The action was organized by the Left Front movement, that includes the opposition leader Sergei Udaltsov, currently under house arrest, and charged with plotting mass disorder in protests against President Vladimir Putin.
The leftist Sergei Udaltsov is among several opposition figures charged with riots and violence against police during a protest against Putin in May on the eve of the former KGB spy's inauguration for a third presidential term.
Another opposition leader Alexei Navalny is charged with embezzling $500,000 from a state-controlled timber company in Kirov while working as an adviser to the regional governor in 2009 and is currently under prosecution. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
