- Story Text: DHAKA, BANGLADESH Protests flared in Bangladesh on Tuesday over plans to build a Hindu temple next to a 16th-century mosque holy site in India.
Members of a Moslem fundamentalist party marched through the streets of Dhaka in protest and burnt an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi outside the Indian High Commission, who they blame for a weekend of violence.
At least five people were killed at Bhagalpur in India during the weekend, according to officials in northern Bihar state. Hundreds of huts were burnt and looted and mobs attacked trains.
Religious tension came to a head on November 9 in both Bangladesh and Pakistan (which are both mainly Moslem) when fundamentalist Hindus laid the foundation stone for the new temple in India.
The Hindu fundamentalists aim to demolish the mosque in the town of Ayodhya in the belief that it was built on the site of a temple marking the birthplace of the Hindu deity Rama.
