- Story Text: Multiple cameras situated around the Tuscan island of Giglio have captured the moment the Costa Concordia was raised from a variety of different angles.
Filmed from around the port area in the early hours of Monday (September 16) just before the project started until the early hours of the morning on Tuesday (September 17) the cameras move from the bobbing boats in the harbour to the incredible engineering feat of hauling the 114,500-ton vessel upright.
In a 19-hour operation that ended at 4 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Tuesday (September 17), the ship was hauled up by huge jacks and cables and lowered onto underwater platforms drilled into the sea bed.
The "parbuckling" technique had never been tried on so large a ship in such a tricky position, with the added risk of an environmental disaster in the azure Tuscan waters. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
