- Story Text: Volcanic ash from Iceland led German authorities to close the airports of Hamburg and Bremen early on Wednesday (May 25), with Berlin likely to follow at 11 a.m. (0900 GMT), according to German media reports.
The air safety authority said late on Tuesday landings and take-offs at Bremen would be halted from 0300 GMT followed by Hamburg an hour later and possibly Berlin from about 1000 GMT.
It said the decision was taken after meteorological services warned that the volcanic ash concentrations in certain areas of northern German would reach recommended safety thresholds.
Additionally, it said Hannover airport was right on the edge of the contaminated air space but so far no accurate forecast could be given of whether it would be affected as well.
Northern Europe looks set to bear the brunt of air traffic disruption from the Icelandic volcanic ash but experts are saying the eruption is rapidly dying down. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
