- Story Text: Nearly three thousand demonstrators took to the streets in Bahrain to protest against the presence of U.S-led troops in Iraq, chanting "Death to America, Death to Israel."
The protesters marched on Friday afternoon (April 11, 2003) along a main road in the Shi'ite Mulsim Saar neighbourhood, near the capital Manama.
They displayed pictures of radical Muslim leaders in the region and chanted anti-U.S slogans.
One protester marched next to a donkey displaying pictures of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. Others waved yellow flags of Lebanon's Hizbollah group, who enjoys a wide popularity among the majority Muslim Shi'ites of Bahrain.
As they marched protesters shouted 'Death to America, Death to Israel' and displayed 'Stop War' placards. Then, they set U.S, Britain and Israeli flags on fire.
The march, that included women and children, was carried out peacefully.
The Kingdom of Bahrain had offered Iraqi president Saddam Hussein a safe haven before the war began.
