- Story Text: Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff and her Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez signed trade agreements on Tuesday (July 31) as the Mercosur trade bloc welcomed Venezuela as a full member.
The two met at a presidential summit in Brasilia which also included Argentina's President Cristina Kirchner and Uruguay's Jose Mujica.
Chavez, who just ended a long cycle of cancer treatment, has been in power since 1999, signed off on the purchase of six planes from Brazilian planemaker Embraer, to be used by Venezuela state-controlled airline Conviasa.
The current deal is worth 270 million dollars, but it could reach 900 million if Venezuela decides to purchase an extra 14 planes.
On Monday, Chavez said Venezuela was also planning to sell crude oil to Brazil, as part of renewed trade ties between the two countries.
