- Story Text: Anti-Gaddafi rebels said they were about 40 km west of Ajdabiyah on Wednesday (13 April), a strategic crossroad that has been the focus of fierce battles in the last two months.
This area guards the gateway to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi 150 km (90 miles) north, along the Mediterranean coast.
Gaddafi's forces bombarded the western entrance to Ajdabiyah on Tuesday (12 April), which is also a launch point for insurgent attacks towards the oil port of Brega on the eastern front. There were eight blasts, apparently from artillery.
The rebel leadership in Benghazi flatly rejected a draft ceasefire agreement drawn up by the African Union as it did not include Col Muammar Gaddafi's immediate removal from power.
Foreign ministers are meeting in Qatar on Wednesday for talks on Libya's future, and are due to hear from representatives of the rebel national council based in eastern Libya.
Some are eager to step up air strikes against Muammar Gaddafi's forces, fearing the conflict could settle into a bloody stalemate. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
