- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: The eleventh world powerlifting championships ended amid controversy in Calcutta on Sunday (8 November).Three lifters -- American Joe Bradley, Kullervo Lampela of Finland and Japan's Hiroyuki Isagawa -- were disqualified for drug offences after tests.Bradley had earlier created two new marks in the bench press and total lift in the 67.5 kilograms class and Isagawa set a new bench press lift of 145 in the 56 kilogram event. These decisions were subsequently reversed. The United States won the team title for the fifth year in a row with England in second place and Finland third.
SYNOPSIS: More than 100 powerlifters from 15 countries took part in the four-day championships at the ??? indoor stadium.
American Paul Wrenn proved to be the strong man of the super-heavy events. He attempted to lift 402.5 kilograms after clearing 365 but was unsuccessful. He increased the weights by more than 20 kilograms with each lift.Wrenn won the 110-125 kilo lift with ease.
Rozar Eriksen of Norway was competitor in the 100 kilogram squat event, on the final day of the championship. His efforts were in vain, however, as he was unplaced.
The large crowd at the stadium maintained a keen interest in all events but their firm favourites were the diminutive competitors in the 52 kilogram class.
Third placegetter in the 100 kilogram squat was England's Tony Stevens, seen here during the event.
The American powerlifters dominated the championship in many of the weight groups and the 100 kilogram squat was no exception. The event was won byu James Cash who finished the three lifts at 922.5 kilogram. Here, he shows the technique which won him the world title.
Second place in the 100 kilogram squat went to Sweden's Conny Nilsson with a total of 892.5 in the three lifts.Nilsson, seen here, was part of the Swedish contingent which took a number of titles home.
Nilsson, Cash and Stevens later took their places on the victory rostrum.
