- Story Text: Egypt's armed forces deployed troops on the ground in the city of Suez early on Saturday (January 26) after nine people were killed in clashes on the second anniversary of the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
Eight of the dead, including a policeman, were shot dead in Suez, and another was shot and killed in the city of Ismailia, medics said.
At least 456 people were injured across Egypt, officials said, in unrest on Friday (January 25) fuelled by anger at Mursi and his Islamist allies over what the protesters see as their betrayal of the revolution.
There were conflicting accounts of the lethal shooting in Suez. Some witnesses said security forces had opened fire in response to gunfire from masked men.
The troops were deployed in Suez after the head of the state security police in the city asked for reinforcements.
"We have asked armed forces to send reinforcements on the ground until we pass this difficult period," Adel Refaat, head of state security in Suez told state television.
The army distributed pamphlets to residents assuring them the deployment was temporary and meant to secure the city.
Black smoke billowed from a government building set ablaze during the Friday protests.
Shipping through Suez Canal proceeded as normal, an official from the canal authority said.
However, witnesses reported that operations at Port Said's port were halted when staff said they would suspend work due to the violence, erupting after a court sentenced to death 21 people accused of involvement in last year's Port Said soccer stadium disaster in which 74 people died.
The families of those killed began preparations for funerals of those killed in clashes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
