- Story Text: Berlin has honoured Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the founding members of the Magnum photo agency, with the most complete photo exhibition of his works so far.
Cartier-Bresson's most well-known photographs, previously unpublished pictures and drawings are on display at the Martin-Gropius-Bau exhibition centre.
"This exhibition is really very special.
Cartier-Bresson's works have often been exhibited in the most important museums around the world but never before was there such a complete exhibition", curator Robert Delpire said.
"His photographs are exceptional because they are always spontaneous. He is not someone who puts together a picture, he never arranges peoples positions."
Last year, on the occasion of Cartier-Bresson's 95th birthday, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris celebrated "the photographer of the century" with a large display of his works.
Cartier-Bresson, born 1908, studied painting before he discovered photography in 1931. He travelled the world with his Leica camera, was imprisoned by the Germans during World War II and in 1947 co-founded Magnum.
Until 1966, he toured Burma, India, Pakistan, China, Europe, North and South America.
In 1974, Cartier-Bresson put his camera aside and started with painting.
The more than 350 works will be on display at Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau until August 15, 2004. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
