- Story Text: Protesters calling for an end to the rule of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein gathered in two separate demonstrations outside the United Nations building on Saturday (April 6).
One group was composed of ethnic Kurds who were protesting against Baghdad's crushing of a rebellion in the north of the country. An estimated two million Iraqi refugees of Kurdish origin are fleeing north to the borders with Iran and Turkey, seeking to Iraqi government troops.
The other demonstrators were supporting Iraqi Shi'ite Moslems, who they said were suffering persecution after a rebellion in the south of Iraq was put down.
Some of the demonstrators termed Saddam's administration a fascist regime. Others said that the United States (US) government should support those Iraqis fighting to end Saddam's rule. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
