- Story Text: United States Secretary of Treasury Jack Lew was in Brussels on Monday (April 8) to discuss global growth policies and economic cooperation with European Union leaders.
After a meeting with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, Lew said the economic recovery in the U.S is dependent on Europe's financial situation.
"In the United States, our economic recovery is gathering strength, American consumers and businesses have demonstrated their resilience with consumption and investment continuing to grow as government support for the economy has receded. The U.S. economy has expanded for 14 consecutive quarters and although the pace of job creation is not as fast as we would like, the private sector has added jobs for 37 straight months. As we address our long term challenges however, our economy's strength remains sensitive to events beyond our shores and we have an immense stake in Europe's health and stability," Lew said.
Lew said he welcomed the measures the EU is taking to build a common supervisory body for the bloc's largest banks within the euro zone.
Van Rompuy said strengthening economic ties between the EU and the United States was important for the recovery of the global economy.
"We look forward to continue our intense economic dialogue at every level of government including at the upcoming G8 summit and we remain convinced that EU-US cooperation is essential to a strong, global economy," Van Rompuy said.
During his visit to the European capital, Lew also met European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
Lew will travel to Frankfurt and Berlin on April 8 for a two-day visit and will meet the Head of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi, among others.
