- Story Text: The families of the some of the French people missing after a cruise liner capsized last week take a painful walk on Friday (June 20) in Giglio Harbour, overlooked by the huge carcass of the doomed Costa Concordia cruise ship sinking slowly off the island's shore.
The relatives were escorted by officials around the harbour area where they had a full view of the capsized vessel.
They were also surrounded by a group of police officers.
It was not clear if they were the relatives of dead or missing passengers.
Debris from he ship has reached the shore - a coffin-like wooden box with the ship's name emblazoned on it stands as another painful reminder of the 11 confirmed dead from the shipwreck. A further 24 are believed missing and hopes of finding them alive, a week after the Costa Concordia hit rocks which tore through the ship's hull and sent it diving down on its side, have dwindled.
Relatives of missing passengers from India and Peru brought flowers to the port.
Europe's transport Commissioner Siim Kallas announced on Friday (January 20) that the body will speed up a review of EU passenger ship safety rules as a direct result of the Costa Concordia accident.
The EU's transport commissioner says the review, which began in 2010, must take full account of the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the vessel in shallow water a week ago.
It is designed to update existing rules on ship stability, design, evacuation procedures and equipment and crew training and qualifications.
The Commissioner has arranged talks before the end of this month with maritime cruise industry representatives and is hosting a Safety of Passenger Ships conference in the spring. Current EU safety rules cover all passenger ships operating in EU waters, regardless of nationality. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
