- Story Text: Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Monday (June 10) said Israel and Colombia had a shared history of violence and the right to happiness. The Colombian president attended a welcome ceremony at the start of his visit to the region together with Israeli president Shimon Peres.
"Our two nations have suffered the pain of violent conflicts. We suffered the stigma of intolerance and we showed that we were stronger than the problems we faced," Santos said.
"Through you I am sending a warm salute to the dear people of Israel, a people with great history, who like the Colombians, have the right to happiness," Santos added.
Santos was later set to meet Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon, Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and visit Jerusalem's Holocaust Memorial Museum Yad Vashem.
He is also set to visit the Palestinian territories on Tuesday (June 11). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
