- Story Text: A fire broke out in Moscow's metro on Wednesday (June 5) - the second to plague the city's underground transport system within a matter of hours.
The fire, which landed 11 people in the hospital, three of them in emergency care, started underground in the city centre, filling tunnels with smoke, and halting metro transportation on Moscow's red line.
The outbreak occurred in the same region where hours earlier another fire caused a mass evacuation, and sent seven people to the hospital.
Reuters video images showed people with blackened faces exiting the metro, and fire-fighters leading people out of exits.
"It was a small second fire. There was a small pocket of fire which just revealed itself. It is being actively extinguished now, it has been almost put out already manually by fire extinguishers," Rescue worker Vadim Mikhailov.
"If it was a terrorist attack then there would be fear of course. But as it is just a fire, or at least that's what they tell us, then there is no fear. They will repair all this. But of course I wouldn't want to be among those who had to be evacuated," Moscow resid ent Victoria said.
Wednesday's morning fire caused a transport collapse in the Russian capital as it broke out during the morning rush hour. The metro is practically the only public transport handy for getting around in the traffic-clogged central Moscow. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
