- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: And now the Middle East crisis. Government sources in Lebanon said on Wednesday (12 August) they were examining an offer by the Libyan Arab Jamahiriyah to provide them with and air defence system. The offer follows a series of Israeli air strikes at Palestinian targets inside Lebanon last month. As Lebanon's defence committee considered the aid, Libya's second-in-command, Major-Salam Jalloud was visiting Syria for talks on the Middle east conflict.
SYNOPSIS: This is the second most powerful man in Libya, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause and stern critic of Israel. he was greeted here at Damascus airport by Syria's deputy president, Mr. Abdel-Halim Khaddam and a number of other government officials.
The visit comes at a time of grave problems for all countries in the Middle East. Syria has clashed several times with Israel over their forces inside Lebanon.
Major Jalloud later met Syria's President Assad to discuss the situation. And one the probable items on their agenda was the latest Libyan offer to Lebanon. The proposed defence system would cost (one billion pounds sterling), according to the Beirut As-Safer newspaper. More than 3,000 Lebanese military technicians and personnel would be trained to operate it. A Libyan government source, quoted by Reuters, said they were determined to give Lebanon the means to defend itself. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
