- Story Text: Tens of thousands of members of the Indignant movement and their supporters demonstrated in Spain on Saturday (May 12) to celebrate the anniversary of the world famous protest on May 15 last year where thousands took to the streets to protest against the financial crisis and political parties.
In Madrid tens of thousands gathered in the central square of Puerta de Sol in a festive atmosphere but the sheer size of the demonstration was a clear expression of the discontent many feel as a result of the government's austerity measures.
Saturday's protest is the first of planned demonstrations and events which will take place over the next four days.
The protests are seen as a test for the movement which many analysts think has lost its initial power, with its rejection of a leader and traditional political structures making it difficult to maintain momentum.
The movement consists of an eclectic mix of anarchists, as well as people who had voted for Spain's mainstream Socialist and Conservative parties.
Spain's 'Indignants' have been a source of inspiration for movements across Europe and the 'Occupy' movement in the Unites States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
