- Story Text: Unusually hot weather in the Netherlands saw the country's long sandy beaches packed with people on Thursday (September 5), a rare sight in the low-lying country where September is normally associated with clouds, rain and wind.
"We did not expect this kind of weather at this time of the year, so we took the day off and are on the beach for a day," said Paul, one of many people who drove to the North Sea coast to escape the inland heat.
"It is just really, really hot. It feels like 40 degrees," a Dutch beach-goer, Amy said.
Dutch media likened the country's temperatures to tropical climate with the thermometer hitting a maximum of 32 degrees celcius in some parts, making it the hottest September day since 1991.
In neighbouring Belgium the sun was shone bright and media reported it to be the hottest fifth day of September since 1962.
