- Story Text: Brazil's soccer coach Dunga revealed on Tuesday (May 11) the official 23-man squad for next month's World Cup and opted to leave Ronaldinho and Adriano out of the team, along with hot young prospect Neymar.
Flamengo's striker Adriano and former World Player of the Year Ronaldinho were left out of the squad, which includes Inter Milan's goalkeeper Julio Cesar and Real Madrid's midfielder Kaka.
Playmaker Ronaldinho has not been picked for Brazil since April last year although an improved season with AC Milan had led to hopes of a recall for the finals in South Africa.
Former Inter Milan striker Adriano, top scorer last year when Flamengo won the Brazilian championship, has struggled for form and with off-field issues as well he has played in roughly half his club's games.
Instead of Adriano, Dunga named Wolfsburg's Grafite, overlooked last year when he was the Bundesliga's top scorer with 28 goals. The 31-year-old forward will play along Sevilla's Luis Fabiano, Villarreal's Nilmar and Santos' Robinho at the forward line.
Robinho, 26, returned on February to Santos on a six-month loan from English Premier League side Manchester City, in an effort to secure his place in the squad among the four forwards.
Coach Dunga refused to bow to pressure to call up Robinho's teammates, Santos' youngsters Paulo Henrique Ganso and Neymar, instead announcing a squad packed with defensive midfielders.
For midfield positions, Juventus' Felipe Melo, Rome's Julio Baptista, Flamengo's Kleberson, Panathinaikos' Gilberto Silva, Benfica's Ramires, Galatasaray's Elano and Wolfsburg's Josue were picked.
Along with Julio Cesar, AS Roma's Doni and Tottenham's Gomes were named as goalkeepers.
Maicon (Inter Milan), Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Michel Bastos (Olympique Lyon), Gilberto (Cruzeiro), Lucio (Inter Milan), Juan (AS Roma), Luisao (Benfica), Thiago Silva (AC Milan) were called for the defenders positions.
Brazil, five-times world champions, faces Portugal, North Korea and Ivory Coast in Group G, which is one of the toughest pools in the tournament. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
