Germany won four Olympic medals on Tuesday (July 31) and after the celebrations it was time to reflect on their success.
Michael Jung celebrated his 30th birthday in style, taking home both team and individual gold in the close-fought eventing contest.
"It started with the preparatory course, everything worked well, we trained together and get along very well," Jung told journalists at a news conference in London Wednesday (August 1) morning.
"That was reason enough to bring positive energy to the games. And the same when we can here, all were in really good form, everything worked out well, the coaches supported us very well, the surroundings, the horse keepers. The entire team (was great)."
His team mate Sandra Auffarth, riding Opgun Louvo, took bronze.
Judoka Ole Bischof missed out on his second Olympic gold, however, losing to South Korean Kim Jae-bum, a repeat of their clash at the Beijing games four years ago.
But Bischof was still pleased with his performance, saying "It was unbelievable that I managed it again at the Olympic games, to time everything so well. It is a fighting sport, and you have to eke out everything again every time.
"Nothing is handed to you. I was a bit afraid in the run up that I exit in the first round because the Italian who I was drawn against was physically very strong and I had to beat him in the very beginning. Nobody like to go to the Olympics just to go home after the first round."
And for his conqueror he had only congratulatory words:
"I told him that he is a true champion, and that he deserved it. And that I can't imagine any other judoka who deserved it more."
France's Tony Estanguet won the gold medal in the men's canoe slalom C1 with Germany's Sideris Tasiadis taking the silver.
Tasiadis said while he cherishes the attention he wished it would last a bit longer.
"It is unfamiliar to get that much attention from the press, we never have that. We normally have one or two who are interested in us. And every four years everyone is interested in our sport. It is great to get that much attention now. It would be cool if it was every year like that." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
