- Story Text: Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has met Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong during his visit to the city-state.
Mugabe met Goh at the Presidential Istana on Tuesday (August 6) after arriving in the city state from neighbouring Malaysia.
Mugabe met Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Monday (August 5), saying he would push for stronger ties with Asian states.
Zimbabwe, facing sanctions from Western states, were among other African nations who were represented at an informal meeting of developing nations in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur over the weekend.
Mugabe's government has proposed retaliation, including actions against his main opposition party, for sanctions Western countries have imposed on him and his officials since he won a controversial election in March.
Singapore has been one of Zimbabwe's trade partners, especially in the lucrative arms market. Government-owned Singapore Technologies, had been exporting ordinance, machine guns and assault rifles to a host of global troublespots, including Zimbabwe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
