- Story Text: After numerous hours of preparation and planning Macy's unveiled its space-themed holiday windows with the help of actor James Earl Jones, fireworks and fanfare.
"It's our Super Bowl, it's our Christmas, it's our everything. We plan these windows a year in advance from the conception of the idea to actually installing as you can see," said Roya Sullivan, Macy's national director window presentation.
For 2014 the store's in-house team as well as a set of freelancers, electricians, animators and more created six windows that track "Santa's Journey to the Stars."
Visitors will be treated to a spectacle of LED lights, custom designed toys and will even be able to interact with a display through a video game.
Sullivan said while there is some pressure in creating a successful holiday display, the store always comes out on top.
"I know that every window we put in is a winner. So as far as I'm concerned we're winning and it will be fantastic and so there is no competition. We're always winners here," she said.
In New York City the unveiling of holiday windows is an all-star event.
Barneys called upon film director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, designer Catherine Martin, to create a display titled Baz Dazzled. The couple revamped the meaning of Christmas with metallics, fictional characters and even an ice skater inside one of its windows.
Fifth avenue retailer Bergdorf Goodman's spent 11 months working on its windows which carries the theme of 'Inspired.' In a press release the store said each window "will be based on a different art form, drawn from the performing arts, applied arts, and fine arts."
A team of over 50 people worked to create Lord & Taylor's windows and claim to be the only store to feature windows on hydraulics.
As the store celebrates its 100th anniversary, its windows were transformed into "enchanted mansions on the eve of the holidays."
The New York City Rockettes stopped traffic to help Saks Fifth Avenue kick off the holiday season with fireworks and a laser light show which took over 9,000 plus hours to produce.
This year the store steps back into the 1920s to create its holiday windows.
Holiday tunes including "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!," and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," inspired Bloomingdales flagship store windows for 2014. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
