- Story Text: It's hot hot hot. With temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius (86 F), elephants at Berlin zoo have been given time off for a visit to the pool.
Elephant mothers and their young offsprings did some turns at Berlin zoo's elephant pool on Thursday (August 12) as temperatures reached 31 degrees Celsius (88 F) in the German capital.
A diet of apples, thrown into the pool by a zookeeper who appeared to envy his protgs, added to the elephants' pleasure.
Joachim Kormann, spokesman for Berlin zoo, had good news for visitors who worried about elephants getting sun burnt: "The important thing is that the elephants' skin is totally submerged in water", Kormann said.
"If you then add sand or mud you get a great protection against the sun -- and it's free too. I would guess it's a protection factor of 30, at least."
Nearby, polar bears too went for a swim and enjoyed a mouthful of refreshing, cool water melon.
Hot temperatures do have their advantages. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
