Italian police have intensified the search for the kidnapped American Brigadier-General James Dozier. The latest communique issued by the Red Brigades on Saturday (16 January) said that the so-called 'peoples' trial' of the highest-ranking US officer at NATO's Allied Land Forces Base was simply part of a wider revolutionary strategy. In Verona itself, the cordon of police around NATO headquarters has been strengthened and officers armed with machine-guns with machine-guns search passing cars. The police presence has also been reinforced outside Brigadier-General Dozier's private residence in the northern Italian city. Italian police are said to regard the issue of Saturday's communique as a sign that the US Brigadier-General is still alive, although there is concern that no new photographs of the captured man have been released. The Red Brigades have set no conditions for his freedom.
