At least one person was killed and twenty-eight were injured after a steel girder collapsed into a thirty-metre deep basement of an office building under construction in Singapore, the city's Civil Defence Force said on Thursday (April 29).
Emergency workers at the site were using sniffer dogs to search for survivors on the site where the government is building a life sciences hub in western Singapore.
"Our disaster assistance and rescue team is currently spearheading the operation and is very much on top of the situation. Right now ,we know the status of the casualties as follows. There have been 28 people who have been injured, now these people have been brought to three different hospitals," said Colonel Subhas of the Civil Defence.
"We have one person who has been declared dead at the scene, now there was one other person who was trapped below the rubble site, sorry below the construction site accident and a short while ago, we have rescued this person alive,"
added Subhas.
He could not confirm how many people were still trapped.
The construction of a government building with a six-storey basement was underway when the accident took place.
The accident comes barely a week after one of Singapore's main highways collapsed, leaving four people dead. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
