Leaders of factions, inside the troubled French Pacific territory of New Caledonia have taken their debate to Paris with the arrival of the head of the Territorial Government in Noumea, Dick Ukeiwe. In an interview on January 23, Ukeiwe said he would not talk with his rival pro-independence leader, Jean marie Tjibaou, who was also in Paris. Ukeiwe described Tjibaou as an outlaw and his "provisional government" as insurrectional. Meanwhile on the island, unidentified saboteurs dealt a harsh blow to the island's economy, putting the two vital nickel mines out of action. The pro-independence Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (KSNLF) denied it carried out an attack on a mine at Thio which caused damaged estimated at three million U.S. dollars. In the latest attack, on January 22, at Kouaoua, saboteurs damaged 25 vehicles by filling engines with grit or running them without oil. About a third of the world's nickel deposits are in New Caledonia, and mining forms the backbone of the economy. In Paris, Tjibaou continued his visit with a meeting with Lionel Jospin, general-secretary of the ruling Socialist Party. Jospin said the discussions were "detailed and useful".
