- Story Text: Indonesia on Friday (May 11) deployed more than 1,000 security personnel and volunteers and four helicopters to help with the search and rescue operation that is still ongoing at the site of the Russian Sukhoi plane crash.
The rescue team at the site found bodies but no survivors on Thursday (May 10) in the wreckage of a Russian passenger jet that crashed into a volcano in Indonesia during an exhibition flight with 45 people on board.
The Superjet 100 aircraft went missing on Wednesday about 40 miles (60 km) south of Jakarta.
Rescue personnel on Friday said they have encountered some difficulties reaching the site.
"We tried to reach the site this morning, but the wind was too strong. We tried to lower the rope but it was carried by the wind," said Agus, a soldier from the elite airforce.
Operation coordinator Ketut Purwa said bad weather hampered the search and rescue operation.
"The Superpuma helicopter flew around the surrounding area but it was not able to find a spot to land, the wind was too strong with a thick fog. Up until now, we have not received any news from our personnel on the ground, we are still waiting for news from them" he said.
Among the victims were Indonesian reporters and businessmen, eight Russians including embassy officials, pilots and technicians, two Italians, a French citizen and an American, the head of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, authorities said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
