Rolando Navarette of the Philippines retained his World Junior Lightweight boxing title, when he knocked out Choi Chung-Il of South Korea in Manila on Saturday (16 January). The knock-out came 1 minute 35 seconds into the 11th round of the scheduled 15 round contest. Earlier in the fight, the South Korean, who was number one contender for Navarette's crown, had knocked down the champion, who suffered the indignity of a mandatory count. Chung-Il was previously unbeaten in 13 fights, but the champion's combination of left and right hand punches left him unable to get to his feet in the 11th round. President Marcos of the Philippines awarded the champion his winner's belt as Navarette supporters in the crowd celebrated. Navarette became champion when he knocked out the British-based Ugandan boxer, Cornelius Boza-Edwards, last August.
