- Story Text: Syrian-backed Shi'ite Moslem Amal militiamen and their pro-Syrian Hizbollah foes continued sporadic clashes in Beirut's southern suburbs on Wednesday as a fresh truce slowly took hold. Tank, artillery and mortar fire were moderated into sporadic exchanges of machinegun fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Security and militia sources said Hizbollah had been gaining the upper hand in the suburbs, a poverty-stricken 41-square kilometre (16 mile) area which had remained outside government control.
The latest clashes brought the casualty toll to 154 dead and 550 wounded since the fighting for control of the Shi'ite suburbs erupted on Friday. The true mediated by Syria and Iran called for an immediate end to the fighting and to all attacks, counter attacks and military operations by Amal and Hizbollah militias, security and militia sources said. It also urged combatants to help ambulances get through to evacuate casualties caught in the crossfire. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
