- Story Text: Greenpeace protesters across Europe and the United States (US) demanded the immediate release of the four activists detained in Japan for the seventh day.
A total of 13 Greenpeace activisits were arrested in Istanbul as they tried to chain themselves at the entrance of the Japanese Consulate General, asking release for their four colleagues in Japan.
Greenpeace declared Monday (May 15) an International Day of Action as supporters from 15 countries gathered at Japanese embassies for the release of four activists arrested in Japan.
Thirteen activists in Turkey took action before the Japanese Consulate General in Istanbul, who was delivering a message to the authorities of the hazards of waste combustion.
Activists in Istanbul blocked the two entrances of the Consulate General and chained themselves. Two activists held two flags written in Japanese reading Release the Greenpeace 4, Stop Incineration, while the others opened a banner with the same message written in Turkish and English.
The action was intended to highlight both local and global environmental and health implications of waste combustion.
Greenpeace reports claim Japan to have the highest levels of emissions in the world, as a consequence of having more waste incinerations than any other country in the world.
Four activists under arrest have climbed the tower of the world's tallest incinerator, Toshima Ward, in Tokyo last Tuesday to protest against Japan's reckless waste incineration policy. They scaled the 210 metre long chimney and dropped a banner proclaiming Tokyo as the worlds dioxin capital. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
