- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: There was a large demonstration by right wingers in Athens on Thursday (3 December). The march underlined the continuing strength of the right in Greece, in spite of the Socialist win at the recent elections. The demonstrations had been banned by the government, but the marchers took no notice.
SYNOPSIS: Those taking part were commemorating a right-wing victory in 1944.Then, in newly liberated Athens, right-wing commandos defeated Communist partisans after prolonged street fighting.Banners honoured the right-wing dead, and prayers were said in memory of fallen comrades.A big crowd attended the rally. They included several right-wing Members of Parliament and opposition leaders, including the 71-year-old veteran politician Evanghelos Averof, a former Foreign Minister and Defence Minister.
The protest had begun in an Athens church. But a large number of people gathered outside.Soon the crown began its march through the streets of Athens. As they walked they chanted right-wing slogans.
These people are more accustomed to being in government than making protests on the streets. Now, it is their opponents who are in power. The new Socialist government of Andreas Papandreou is gradually making its policies clear. It wants to negotiate the NATO treaty. It wants a new arrangement with the European Community. It also wants a nuclear-free zone in the Balkans, stronger defences against Turkey and the nationalisation of important sectors of the economy.
At present, the right is powerless to prevent this. But strong opposition is building up to Mr.Papandreou's plans. This demonstration was a visible symbol of that opposition. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
